Hey. I have panic attacks. They run in my family. What I do to get over them when I dont have my meds is I think of somewhere calm. Like the ocean swimming with dolphins or in a grassy field with flowers and the wind blowing a little. Just close your eyes. Get in a quite place and use deep breathing. Think about your calming place. You can do it. It will pass.

xanax is ok, but it also makes you sleepy, i have dealt with severe panic attacks for 8 years and the only thing that truly helped me was Zoloft, i am panic free now…………

I use to have panic attacks, but thank goodness, don't have much of a problem anymore. I didn't like taking medications because of weight gain, but did when the attacks were bad. What I do now if I start feeling a little anxious is turn the air conditioning to cooler, and or put a cold wash cloth on my face, drink some ice water. Amazing how much it helps. Panic attacks are not pleasant. The first one I had, I thought I was having a heart attack. If you can get out in the cool weather (If you are in a warm weather zone in the early morning or later evening) go for a walk, walking at a fast pace. I call that walking it out. If possible, take the medicine only when you are having a panic attack. Do you have the panic attacks more at home? Do you have them in the car? Pull over to the side of the road until the panic attack passes.
Can you get out and go camping and or fishing to relax? Is there a pretty park to go walking in nearby?
I'm not saying it easy when a panic attack occurs. I do have medication on hand, but would rather do the above mentioned. Hope you can get them under control soon. I can remember how awful it was when I was having them.
If you have depression with the panic attacks, and your medications are not working, then you need to see your Dr.
Wishing you the very best in getting rid of the anxiety/panic attacks without having to take a daily medication, but if you have to, then do what works best for you.
I'm not a Dr., just an ordinary person who knows how you are feeling because I've been in that situation. (and occasionally still do have the problem if there is a lot of stress going on in my life)

I'm shocked at the first answerer who claims he's a doctor and directs you to use a drug – without knowing your circumstances.
As you state in your question, you're better off striving for a cure rather that just masking the symptoms with drugs.
You haven't described the nature of your panic attacks i.e have you had an identifiable traumatic event, or have they been occurring for no apparent reason? It may be that there's so much stress and anxiety in your life that your subconscious is having trouble keeping a lid on it. ie. At some point, an additional stressful event during the day might push you over the edge and trigger a panic attack.
There are a lot of self-help treatments available. Have you tried any of these? I would suggest that they're worth trying but choose something with substance, something that has been professionally produced and offers a money-back guarantee (to make sure that it works for you). Avoid the simple Ebook that someone put together over the weekend. If you're interested in some recommendations then you can visit http://www.health-creation.com/Controlling-panic-attacks.html

I have suffered from panic attacks for about 10 years and for me I could think of all the calm places in the world and that would not help. The drugs were not for me…I feel I have slept 5 years of my life away. I have since cured my panic/anxiety disorder and feel like I can live again…people who don't suffer just can't understand the hell we live in.
You need to visit this site and read the story and see how this person can cure your panic disorder forever…it literally saved my life
