I’ve been suffering from panick attacks for about 3 months now and I’ve tried lots of different methods incl. therapy, tablets, massage and even natural remedies. They stopped for a week or two but now they’re back again. They’ve come back since I planned a trip to go to New York last week. I’ve had this bad fear of flying for a few years now and I always avoid it but i really want to go to New York and from Ireland that’s my only option. Whenever I think about the plane I feel really claustrophobic and I have a panic attack. I so want to go, it’s my dream. If I do manage to get on the plane and go I’m afraid the trip will be ruined by the thoughts of the 7 hour flight back. It’s really ruining something I should be excited about and now whenever somebody mentions the trip my stomach feels sick. It’s not until October of next year, that’s 15 months away. Can I have some suggestions on how to calm down about the thoughts of the flight and tips for staying calm on the plane?
Three months is not long enough for therapy to work – I took anti- depressants for one year and saw a cognitive therapist for 18 months in order to overcome my travel phobia and panic attacks. Unfortunately this isn’t a quick fix but I stopped the c.t 5 years ago and haven’t had an attack since. She did give me a relaxation tape, which included various exercises to lower stress and muscle tension, to use on planes and this along with the extra medication they gave me worked wonders.
