A Young Woman Requires Counseling for Her Mental Illness and For Her Drug and Alcohol Dependency
Roughly seven weeks ago I met a twenty-eight-year-old female named Rachael who is bipolar and who is also addicted to alcohol and drugs. I remember reading that in such situations, a person needs to get counseling for both medical situations and that mental health issues and dependency frequently occur in the same person. Furthermore, I recollect reading that a history of excessive and unhealthy drinking, drug addiction, and/or mental health issues commonly occur in the same family.
Obviously, Rachael is so defeated by both of her medical issues that she essentially has little or no desire to achieve much of anything. What is particularly sad about this is that earlier in her life, Rachael completed one-and-a-half years of college. Rachael’s condition makes me wonder if she is an example of a person who has to hit the very bottom before he or she gets drug and alcohol dependency counseling that results in long lasting recovery.
The Need For a Therapist She Trusts and a Rehabilitation Program She Can Believe In
If I were in contact with Rachael I could suggest several websites and blogs that could possibly help her learn more about addiction and alcoholic behavior, important substance abuse information, facts about alcoholism and drugs, and info about addiction symptoms and alcoholism warning signs. From my perspective, however, Rachael needs to find a therapist she trusts and a counseling regimen she can believe in and follow over the long term. I could be wrong but it seems to make sense that Rachael more likely than not needs to understand the fact that she cannot drink at all or abuse drugs if she wants to get sober, stay sober, and start on the path to long-term sobriety.
I am aware that there are more than a few recently created physician-prescribed meds that can help Rachael through the drug and alcohol detox process, through her withdrawal symptoms, and help her avoid an alcohol or a drug relapse. Clearly it would be in Rachael’s best interests if she knew about these meds.
It seems clear that Rachael needs to understand the fact that there is completely nothing productive about excessive and abusive drinking and substance abuse and that involving herself in one or both conditions is the route to legal problems, shattered relationships, financial difficulties, a premature death, deteriorating health, and poor work and school performance.
The Relevance of Support Groups Like Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous
There are probably numerous persons such as family members, friends, and other people who would love to help Rachael but she more likely than not would experience greater acceptance from a support group such as Narcotics Anonymous or Alcoholics Anonymous instead of listening to individuals who rarely drink or who have never abused drugs.
When People Accomplish Things They Like and About Which They Are Ardent
There’s a school of thought that contends that people who do things they like and something about which they are dedicated arrive at a splendid place in life. Stated differently, when people do what they enjoy, they hardly ever experience an uneventful life or boredom. If they involve themselves in something that is gratifying, furthermore, they become more actualized and experience more happiness and delight in life.
To me, this sounds like the exact opposite of a life that is centered in alcohol and drug addiction because such a lifestyle removes the gratification and joy that life has to offer.
Since Rachael lacks the motivation to accomplish much of anything in her life, it is plain to see that she desperately needs a little hope for a better life. And the sad thing is that hope is all around Rachael if she could only get to the place in life to get the counseling she needs for her bipolar illness and drug addiction and alcoholism and remain in her treatment protocol.
Positive Change, Self Esteem, and a Meaningful Life Are a Reality
Rachael is clearly too young to be defeated in life. She doesn’t comprehend this at this time in her life but if she can learn how to stay away from alcohol and drugs via alcohol and drug rehab and get the counseling she needs for her bipolar issue, she can redirect her life and start living with direction, passion, and with self-respect.
A wonderful life, self esteem, and positive change are certainly a reality for Rachael if only she could become motivated to get the medical treatment she needs, follow through with her treatment program, live her life in a healthy and alcohol and drug-free manner, and develop a more positive attitude about life.
