Gynecomastia is the abnormal development of breast tissue in men; it is a condition that may affect teenagers or adults. It can be physiologic, due to puberty or idiopathic, related to problems with hormonal balance. It can also be related to medication or drug abuse. Gynecomastia is a disease that affects large number of men; it is reversible when present for short period of time, but the main effects of the condition are psychological and emotional, as men react quite negatively to this abnormality on their body, regardless of the fact that it can be quite common. Although studies prove that women can accept such a condition, men do not seem to be happy about it. The emotional consequences of the disease need to be worked on additionally to any physical treatment.

Adult men with gynecomastia feel inferior compared to men with flat chests, because they consider themselves somewhat out of place; they lose their self confidence and in some cases self hatred can also be observed. This condition can affect themselves and their families as well.

Most men have a hard time going to the sea or pool, or get undressed for any reason. In most severe cases, breasts cannot be hidden by clothes either; this means that fear of humiliation is always present.

Although women do not question the sexuality or masculinity of men with woman-like breasts, men feel extremely uncomfortable getting involved in sexual relationships with women, thinking that women might make fun of their breasts. The typical stereotype of men with flat and strong chest can weigh heavily on their minds, preventing them from seeking sexual relationships. Problems with self awareness and self acceptance can easily occur in this case.

Men who suffer from gynecomastia should seek medical treatment, consulting with experts who can effectively address their problem. The sooner they rid themselves from these breasts, the sooner they will be able to adjust to society again, avoiding intimidations.
