Treating Anxiety Attacks The Natural Way

Anxiety attacks seem to come out of the blue. They come on without warning and they are impossible to prepare for. Needless to say, anxiety attacks are unwanted events. However, for those of us who have had, or are now recovering from anxiety disorder, anxiety attacks are a fact of life.

Treating anxiety for the long haul doesn’t mean just treating one issue. It requires dealing with several factors. Still, anxiety disorder can certainly be overcome. I know this for a fact. However, this article deals with those moments or hours of anxiety or panic attack. Here, we will discuss how to get through them and how to turn the corner on panic so we can see a time when it will never bother us again.

Please take note before you begin to follow this advice that you have seen a health care provider who has told you anxiety is the problem you are dealing with.

It Is Adrenaline

The first step in dealing with a panic attack is to understand it is adrenaline causing this panic in our bodies. In extremely stressful situations, adrenaline will overwhelm us. It will run through our veins causing us to feel sensations we don’t normally feel. For instance, our hearts will race and our palms will sweat. We will often see and hear things that may not be there.

When we know why adrenaline is flooding our bodies we will not be overly concerned with it. It is when adrenaline appears for no apparent reason that we become bewildered, confused, and we try to fight off the feelings it brings to us. The antidote is simply knowing adrenaline is making us feel way out of whack.

Remember Relaxing

The next step is to think relaxation. I know this sounds simple and it may in certain situations be impossible. In such a situation, the best you can do is relax as much as you can. If you are in a situation where you are able, sit down for a few moments and think relaxed thoughts. Trying to make yourself relax is counterproductive. Just think about things that are relaxing to you. Fill your mind with memories of relaxed times and pictures that are relaxing to you.

If you have been practicing relaxation techniques, now is the time to try to recall how you felt during these relaxation sessions. The key is not to force anything, but just let go a bit. In some cases it even helps people to role play the part of a relaxed person that they know.

Surrender

The next element in dealing with an anxiety attacks is not to fight it. Now, if you’re sitting somewhere comfortably, think as much as you can about relaxed settings or feelings; take the attitude you’re going to let the feelings caused by adrenaline do to you whenever they will.

Say to yourself, “here I am adrenaline come get me!” This is the opposite of what most people do. Most people when encountering anxiety attacks try to fight it or run away from it. It is fight or flight that brings on adrenaline. So to stop this chain of events we have to not run away from these feelings of adrenaline and the only way to do this is to develop the mindset of surrendering to them.

Concentrate on the Awful Feelings

An extension to the step of surrender is to actually concentrate on the feelings adrenaline is bringing to you. This means you are facing them straight on. When you do this, you can’t possibly be running away from them. Don’t try to change these feelings because this would be fighting them. Just let these feelings do what they’re going to do and take note of what they are doing. If you do this, you will find these feelings are not as scary as you thought.

Because panic, or anxiety attacks can be so overwhelming and so frightening, it is easy to be petrified of them. It is this very thing that makes them so bad. When we can bring ourselves to the point we no longer fear having anxiety attacks, they become toothless, clawless monsters. They may still be a factor in our lives for a while, but they will no longer be such a major disturbance.

What are the Physical Symptoms of Anxiety Attacks?

Some of the changes seen in someone that suffers from an anxiety attack are sweating, higher heart rate, shaking, pounding heart, trembling, palpitations, choking, shortness of breath, nausea, chest pain, fainting, dizziness, going crazy, hot flushes, fear of dying or losing control.

You could describe the symptoms that come before an attack as powerful feelings of dread, control loss, shaking and trembling, hot flushes, sweating, dry mouth and tense muscles. Something that patients might complain before suffering from an attack is dizziness, being lightheaded or chest congestion.

You can’t determine how serious the attack is just by counting the number of symptoms. An attack can have all of the symptoms that I just talked about or it can have just a few of them. And in some cases, attacks can happen without actually have any symptoms.

When panic attacks happen, a number of changes appear in the body and the end result is depression and a feeling of being worn out. Another result is distress, as muscle tension is one of the symptoms.

Migraines, facial numbness and headaches can be caused by the tension in the neck and head muscles. Tender breasts and rib pain can be caused by chest tensions happening because of breathlessness. The mouth, cheek, face and jaw are all affected by these secondary effects.

One very effective technique I have used to combat panic and anxiety attacks is through controlling my breathing. By taking deep full breaths and concentrating on your breathing, it has helped me control my panic attacks considerably.

If you are like me or most other panic attack sufferers, you will know when a panic or anxiety attack is coming. Practice this breathing technique and you can avert your panic attacks.

How do doubts and panic attacks relate?

i really need help on this one. how do you control doubts or stop having doubts when you have panic attacks? please! i really need help on this one, for my best friend.

Doubts are just part of the ideas which surround panic attacks. It’s hard to say exactly what a panic attack is – the nerves just go nuts and fire like crazy. If you observe carefully you’ll notice that you don’t even necessarily have to be scared – the panic part is mostly a physical thing. The mind searches around quickly for a reason for all this – and finding no reason then it begins to make stuff up – perhaps these are the "doubts" you speak of.

It’s said that this anxiety/panic is telling you a story – perhaps something happened in your distant past – as a small child – which scared the crap out of you. It got repressed or "forgotten" – and then later in life it returns. But now all you get is the crazy fear-like stuff – you don’t know the reason this is happening.

So that’s what psychiatry is supposed to be all about – putting together what really happened in the past with how you feel now. And when this is done, that’s when the story is told and the panic attack doesn’t need to occur anymore.

There are moments in a person’s life that just leads him to feel overpowered by an uncontrollable fear of something that hinders him to do what he is supposed to do. He is then led to worry too much, lose focus and concentration, and leave him immobile for a certain instance.

The best way to fight anxiety and panic is to know more about it. There are a lot of references available online. Here are some of the things that you need to know.

Most people try to deny what they are going through because of wrong notions about panic and anxiety. But the more you know about the attacks, the easier it is for you to get past the denial stage. And the more you accept things as they are, the easier it will be to address them properly.

You cannot live your whole life running away from things that give you fear or worry. In the process of learning how to control your worry and confronting the issues, you must equip yourself with a stronger personality that will overcome panic and anxiety attacks.

These things will help you cope up with anxiety and panic attacks. Follow the tips and start looking at things positively; and surely, panic and anxiety threats will be part of history.
