How to Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Generalized anxiety disorder is diagnosed if symptoms are present in most days than not for more than six moths.

Generalized anxiety disorder is one of the common anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorders are the term covering several different forms of abnormal, pathological anxiety, fear, phobia and nervous condition, which may come on all of a sudden or gradually, over a period of several years and may impair or prevent the pursuing of normal daily routines.

The essential characteristic of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is excessive uncontrollable worry about everyday things. This constant worry affects daily functioning and can cause physical symptoms. GAD is usually difficult to diagnose for it lacks some of the dramatic symptoms, like unprovoked panic attacks, that are seen with other anxiety disorders. To be able to diagnose Generalized Anxiety Disorder, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Symptoms must be present more days than not for at least 6 months.

The diagnostic criteria for Generalized Anxiety Disorder symptoms are:

- Excessive anxiety and worry (apprehension), occurring more days than not for a period of at least 6 months, about numerous events or activities.

-The person with GAD finds it hard to control the worry.

-The anxiety and worry are associated with three or more of the following six symptoms, with at least some symptoms are present for more than 6 months in most days than not (at least one is required for children):

-restlessness or feeling tense or on the edge

-easily fatigued

-difficulty concentrating or mind going blank

-irritability

-muscle tension and muscle aches

-difficulty falling or staying asleep, or restless unsatisfying sleep

-difficulty swallowing -trembling, sweating

-nausea, light-headedness

-feeling out of breath

The focus of anxiety and worry is not limited to, or the anxiety or worry is not about having a panic attack, being embarrassed in the public, being contaminated, gaining weight, having multiple physical complaints, or having a serious illness, and the anxiety, and worry do not occur exclusively during post traumatic disorder.

The anxiety, worry, or physical symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of everyday activities.

The disturbance is not due to the direct physiological effect of substance, such as alcohol and drug abuse, or medical condition, and does not occur exclusively during a mood disorder, a psychotic disorder, or a pervasive developmental disorder.

When the anxiety level of people with GAD is mild, they can still function socially and keep a job. Even if they don’t avoid certain situations as a result of their disorder, they may have difficulty doing the simplest daily activities if there anxiety is severe. The disorder comes on gradually and can begin at any age, but the risk is highest between childhood and middle age.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder is commonly treated with medication or cognitive-behavioral therapy. Several drugs are used to treat anxiety disorders and these include: benzodiazepines and antidepressants, and Quetiapine.

Often, people will look at Hollywood stars from a distance, and wish that they were so perfect and glamorous. But what people forget is that Hollywood stars are, after all, just people. They are no more immune to the problems that plague people than the rest of us are. And panic disorders are no exception. All sorts of people can have panic disorders. Men, women, children, business executives, and yes, Hollywood stars.

It can be interesting to read about Hollywood stars and their battles with panic disorders. As you can imagine, having a panic disorder such as stage fright can cause serious problems for a person who’s career is based around appearing in front of large groups of people. The image any Hollywood star wants to project is that of calm confidence, and having a panic attack that is caught on film can shatter that image. But panic attacks can happen anywhere, anytime. Some Hollywood stars have admitted to having panic attacks:

Onstage, and forgetting lines or lyrics
On an airplane
Some recollect having panic attacks even as a teenager
Panic attacks caused by their status as celebrities
Panic attacks brought on by the constant scrutiny and photographs of paparazzi

In general, panic disorders are not particularly tied to any one event. There are many cases of Hollywood stars that have panic attacks, but never onstage, or not particularly tied to being onstage. Stage fright (the disorder) is a kind of anxiety disorder, not a panic disorder. The defining trait of panic disorders as opposed to anxiety disorders are that panic attacks can happen anywhere, anytime. So, while a Hollywood star may have a panic attack onstage, it’s not because they were onstage. It just happened to occur while they were onstage.

It is good that Hollywood stars are willing to share their experiences fighting panic disorders. Their stories and how they deal with their panic disorder can help all people with panic disorders learn to cope. People are usually embarrassed by their panic disorder, and having someone so very much in the public eye come out and tell their experiences dealing with panic disorders can lessen that feeling.

Ignoring your condition is the worst thing you can do. Seek treatment, and realize it is nothing to be embarrassed about. 40 million Americans each year are treated for anxiety and panic disorders, so you are far from alone. And if a Hollywood star, who depends on their public image more than most, can come out and tell the world that they have a panic disorder, you should be able to as well.

Panic attacks and anxiety disorders affect even 5 year olds. The difference between these panic attacks on children and the same on adults is that the former one is tougher to detect. It is often misdiagnosed as a deficit disorder when it actually happens to be a panic attack on the child. Even hyperactivity is suspected sometimes, the main reason being the symptoms are close to being the same for both these kind of disorders. So it is often misdiagnosed in children.

While the anxiety disorders or attacks happen for some reason or the other and can be fairly identified, the panic attacks are never predictable. It can happen more than twice without any reason at all. The problem lies in identifying these causes. When these have an effect on 5 year olds, it might or might not have a cause depending on the diagnosis, but still it is advised to be addressed. The fact that it is hard to explain what the 55 year old feels makes these panic attacks unpredictable.

Like adults, children too have their own worries. It becomes disaster only when these worries and tension turn into panic and attacks their ability to live normally. This is quite a serious problem that can happen to any child. It can happen to them anywhere, especially at school or at home. These panic attacks can be specific as well, depending on the lifestyle of the kid, mostly just like adults. Adults understand it better than children, obviously. When these panic attacks have their impact on children, patient diagnoses and treatment is desired. Every child is unique and heir behaviors vary from how they do in school and at home.

The main two reasons for panic attacks on 5 year olds is the agony of separation and the avoidance factor, the latter being the more severe one. Some children may just have anxiety on less specific things and thus making diagnosing a tad difficult. But 5 year olds, especially boys, find it very tough to cope up with their parent’s separation, for instance. Being avoided too makes it a problem for these young kids as they all thrive for attention and care at that age. The child carrying an abuse may feel shy to let it out, thus inviting panic attacks on it.

Panic attacks on children reveal in various forms, ranging from physical to psychological. Physical symptoms include intense sweating and difficulty in breathing. Psychological symptoms could be hard to explain for the child, but they mostly include abuse and avoidance. Children are often left bemused over their state, as it is understandably hard for them to perceive their problem. The child may be suffering from agoraphobia or the fear of social situations. The parents have to take extra care and concern on these budding children when they have an idea about the panic attacks their child is suffering from.

The first thing you do when you identify that your child is having panic attacks is to understand to avoid minimizing the problem. Patient treatment and good relaxation can solve this issue.
