panic attacks the fear of flying Archives

I have to go on vacation, (yes HAVE TO, im being forced)
and it requires 2 plane rides.
I have the WORST fear of flying,
and I always think the airplanes are going to crash.
I go to this place almost every summer, and I still have not gotten over my fear.
I’m really scared, what if the airplane crashes!!!? I WOULD DIEE!
How can I get over my fear?
I dont want to be scared foreverr.

Did you know that it is estimated that over ten percent of the population in the United States has a fear of flying in an airplane? The reason for this fear ranges from feeling trapped inside an airplane, to being afraid of the airplane crashing, to not liking the feeling of the airplane bouncing around in turbulence, to being afraid of thunderstorms and severe weather, to not trusting the flight crew. No matter what the reason is, you can learn how to change yourself, relax, and actually enjoy a flight for once.

To begin with, make sure that you are comfortable. Dress as comfortably as possible. Wear loose clothes so that you won’t become too hot inside the airplane. Be sure to take a jacket or sweater wiht you on board, though, in case you become chilled. Next, get comfortable in your seat. Fasten your seat belt and relax. Remember that the entire crew of the airline that you have chosen to fly on are trained individuals who are making their careers in the airline industry. They want to do as good as job in their line of work as you want them to do. Some fo the pilots have thousands of hours flying time under their belts, and they are able to skillfully take off, fly, and land the airplanes with no problem whatsoever. Granted, sometimes airplanes have mechanical malfunctions, but these pilots are trained and experienced in handling all situations.

The next thing to do, after you are physically confortable, is to comfort your inner self. Relax. Breathe in through your mouth and out of your nose. Breathe deeply several times. This will help increase the amount of oxygen that is going into your body. Do not hyperventilate though. Control your breathing and concentrate on relaxing your entire body.

Next, make yourself replace your negative thoughts with positive thoughts. Do not worry about the airplane crashing, for example. Turn this negative thought into a positive thought by thinking ahead to how good it is going to feel to land safely at your destination and see your family, friends, or meet new business asociates.

Another method that you can try is to divert your attention so you can take your mind off of flying in an airplane. You can strike up a conversation wiht the person seated next to you, read a magazine or a favorite book, or recline your seat, once the airplane is in flight, and take a nap. If the person next to you seems calm and relaxed, you could ask them what their secret is too.

Read a book. Countless books are devoted to overcoming the fear of flying.

How can i beat my Fear of flying?

I have tried everything from Hypnosis, a Virgin fear of flying course, been to see a homoeopath and also been on Diazepam i don’t know what else to try please help?

Old joke, still good.

A patient walks in and says "Doctor, Doctor!! It hurts when I do this." The doctor replies "Then stop doing that."

Irrational fears can only be overcome when the ground has been prepared significantly beforehand. In this case, eliminating as much of exposure to the fear stimulus as possible and slowly reintroducing it in manageable gulps. Taking Diazepam (because you’re afraid of roller coasters) while standing in line for the Tower of Death Super Twisting Inverted Roller Terror is NOT preparing the ground. Not only won’t it help you get over your fear of roller coasters (for example) but it might actually make the fear worse.

Here is a small test that’s easy to do. What do you think of when I say ‘airplane’? If your mind stumbles through every bad scenario imaginable, past and present experience included, then the fear is still too omnipresent in your mind to even begin working on being anywhere near that environment. In other words, if you can’t handle the idea of the fear, then you can’t handle the fear itself.

You can’t ‘beat’ a fear. Unless you’ve become immortal and indestructible, the fear basis of pain and death trumps rationality every time. And everything you do to ‘trick’ your mind into pretending you aren’t afraid, surprise surprise, makes it even more so. That means that you have to accept that your fear is actually valid. That means treating it like you would anything else labeled dangerous, hazardous and such. You don’t stick your hand in an open flame, why would you stick your mind in the emotional equivalent?

Suffice to say, if your business or life requires you to travel, let’s hope you aren’t involved in anything important. A person afraid of spiders doesn’t volunteer to work the arachnid house at their local zoo. Last thing I need is a jumpy zoo keeper in charge of Black Widow spiders. Assuming you aren’t, the first thing is eliminating all thoughts and hopes, right now, of getting on a plane. Again, you don’t get over your fear standing in line at the roller coaster. You start to get over your fear the day in autumn when the amusment park closes and you know you have a whole six months to not worry about it (or longer, if you live far enough away from one.)

Most irrational fears have two origins: direct (bad experience) and indirect (mommy and daddy were yelling while a news anchor talked about a plane crash on tv.) Figuring out which your fear is based on is actually very helpful in getting treatment. Indirect causes don’t respond well to role-playing and rational examinations since they just serve as subconscious excuses for what is really wrong with you. All the ‘picture yourself on a desert island’ visualizations won’t help you at 20,000 ft. when your fear of mommy’s disproval kicks in.

That is why medicine is a poor substitute for counseling. Drugs target neurons and chemical receptors, not thought processes. Throwing a wet blanket over a schizophrenic just makes them a soggy schizophrenic. Medicine only works as part of a therapy program, when the numbed mind is more receptive to thinking and guiding by a professional. Simply taking anti-anxiety meds isn’t going to take away your anxiety. If the origin isn’t physical, the treatment can’t only be physical and be successful.

So, stay away from airplanes. Right now, that’s a super-big chunk of homework for you to accomplish, more than enough. We’ll worry about whether or not you want to order over-priced headphones much later.

Can a fear of flying be fixed?

Does anyone know if a fear of flying can be fixed? I’ve only ever flown once and had an awful experience filled with panic attacks and anxiety. I want to sort my problem out but Im not sure where to go. Can somebody offer any advice on where to go?

Have you tried one of the flying fear courses? I used to be frightened of flying myself and found that a good online course was just what I needed. I tried a program by a trained pilot and for me personally it really worked.

It taught me all about the safety of planes and how to conquer my fear. I did a quick google search and found a review for a similar course here. Could be worth a try! http://www.overcomethefearofflying.org

Bird Flu Threat Case In Europe

Why the health authorities are too scary about this virus H5N1?

It reminds some of the health researchers and scientists about the Black Death (Bubonic Plague) that broke out in China in 1300 and quickly spread to Europe. The death toll soon was in millions.

The scientists fear that this virus H5N1 has similar potentialities. However, the beginning of the devastation created by this virus is humble. The total death toll since its emergence is just 200! For the present, the rate of annihilation is slightly over 50% of the total persons affected.

For the Bubonic Plague, the carriers were the rats. For the bird flu, it is birds. The rats traveled in boats that carried the cargo from one country to another. Birds do it without the services of boats or jets. They are capable of flying from one country to another and now they show their damage capacity.

Having suffered the devastating Plague, why Europe is now worried is…this bird flu virus mutates at a fast rate! It hardly takes few months to develop itself in to a new virus, and the medical research is unable to catch up the virus in this marathon.

The true nature of these viruses is nothing but a guessing game. H5N1 is a deadly virus, and wants the return of at least 50% of the human beings that it attacks!

So, the bird flu has become the prize-coverage and the news related to it is given in the front page columns. The researchers see the latent threat in those fast multiplying and dividing viruses of bird flu.

The African, European and Asian countries could be the hotbeds for this disease. Will the bird-flu dance the death dance here? Some of the countries are in the process of conducting the mock-exercises, to tackle the eventuality of bird-flu. Those who are not much informed about the sequences and consequences of this disease do collect some introductory information about these viruses.

The European countries are well versed in wars. After having suffered the death and devastation in two major World Wars, the health authorities of these nations are now tuning themselves to face this weaponless war!

This recent outbreak of the bird flu has taken the scientists and the researchers in Europe scurrying for the panic buttons. A decade ago, very few knew what this bird flu was. Now, the economists, scientists and the politicians are all worried about it. World Health Organization has given the top priority to devise ways and means to tackle this disease.

And finally, Bill Gates opens the gates to sanction additional grants in the cause of preventing the bird-flu!
