I have a beloved relative overseas and she needs to come to the States by plane sooner or later – NO exceptions.
For her it’s going to be an 11 to 13 hr. flight…
She FEARS flying…
And here are some of the other things that she fears…
1) Unlike before, she doesn’t like to go upstairs (2nd, 3rd, 4th floors, etc.) So she basically avoids local shopping malls and department stores altogether now.
What drives me crazy is that she wasn’t like this before!
2) If she has to walk around the neighboorhood or an alley, she wouldn’t because… I really don’t know why.
3) If she’s inside home and if it rains/snows a lot, she tells me that she feels trapped inside the rain/snow.
How can I bring her to the United States?
I am so worried…
The doctors over there say that it’s something inside her brain that no longer functions correctly and that she could DIE from flying from a heart attack or panic attack…
This is driving me crazy…
and she HAS to come here…
Fear of heights is a pretty common phobia, it can be caused by a number of things. Therapy is probably the best approach for this fear – there are several methods used for phobias, most involving exposure to the phobic object (in your relative’s case – heights). Cognitive-behavioral therapy has the highest percent of positive results for this type of conditions.
Your relative should check CB (or other approaches she is comfortable with) therapists in her area, or ask her physician to recommend her to one. The duration of the therapy depends on how serious her condition is, how long it lasted, how open she is to therapy and the quality of the communication with the therapist. There are therapists and centers that report successful results in less than 6 weeks.
For emergency situations, therapists speed up the process by offering several sessions per week.
If she doesn’t have enough time for therapy, I would suggest taking a mild anti-depressant (also used for anxiety conditions) or a natural remedy – Kava-Kava roots or Valerian herbs (found in pharmacies) – for the duration of the flight.
