I have always had an intense anxiety whenever I travel in an airplane. After take-off I am fine.It is just a fear of the unknown mostly.I fly often and am moving away from my hometown soon so flying will be a neccessary part of my life.I’m sick of taking pills to ease my nerves.I want to know of an effective method to rid me of this fear.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy – is a form of psychotherapy that emphasizes the important role of thinking in how we feel and what we do. Cognitive-behavioral therapist teach that when our brains are healthy, it is our thinking that causes us to feel and act the way we do. Therefore, if we are experiencing unwanted feelings and behaviors, it is important to identify the thinking that is causing the feelings / behaviors and to learn how to replace this thinking with thoughts that lead to more desirable reactions.

There are several approaches to cognitive-behavioral therapy, including Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, Rational Behavior Therapy, Rational Living Therapy, Cognitive Therapy, and Dialectic Behavior Therapy.

I have a 7 yr old nephew that is deathly afraid of flying in planes. We would take him on trips but we can’t seem to get him on a plane. I assume that he is afraid of heights (On a recent trip to an amusement park, he stated that he did not want to ride a kiddie rollercoaster because it was too high). I would like some suggestions on how to overcome his fear. We’re planning a trip to disneyworld and we would like him to go with his sister. He refused to go to Disneyworld because we told him it is a plane trip.

Mature answers only.

Sounds like a phobia. You should deal with this now before he becomes an adult who fears flying. I’d try exposing him to planes, maybe take him to an air show? a museum of flight? Try to explain to him how safe planes are. If you can afford it try to take him on a short flight so he doesnt have to sit through a long trip the first time. Once you get him on the plane tell the flight attendants that hes a first time nervous flyer so they will be extra nice to him
